Getting Down to Work: The Board's Quality Dashboard and How to Use It

  • Eric Lister, MD, President Ki Associates LLC

How Can the Work of the Board Translate to the Bedside?

Dashboard NOT an end unto itself – idea is to condense reams of data into clear and meaningful graphic representation – allow trends to "jump off the page" – facilitate questioning and dialogue by illuminating critical issues

  1. How should we understand those data?
  2. What will it take to change our results?
  3. How long should we expect it to take us to become exemplary?
  4. What have we learned?
  5. What are we doing differently now?
We can measure:
  1. Simple counts [unanticipated deaths]
  2. Trends [increasing compliance with protocols]
    • As raw #s
    • Compared internally to past performance/future goals
    • Compared externally to benchmark data
  3. Consistency across providers, teams, units
Two caveats:
  1. No standard or universally applicable dashboard
  2. Not every issue requiring oversight is amenable to dashboard reporting
  3. Therefore, we need to leave time for other dimensions of quality reporting
