How Can the Work of the Board Translate to the Bedside?
Dashboard NOT an end unto itself – idea is to condense reams of data into clear and meaningful graphic representation – allow trends to "jump off the page" – facilitate questioning and dialogue by illuminating critical issues
- How should we understand those data?
- What will it take to change our results?
- How long should we expect it to take us to become exemplary?
- What have we learned?
- What are we doing differently now?
We can measure:
- Simple counts [unanticipated deaths]
- Trends [increasing compliance with protocols]
- As raw #s
- Compared internally to past performance/future goals
- Compared externally to benchmark data
- Consistency across providers, teams, units
Two caveats:
- No standard or universally applicable dashboard
- Not every issue requiring oversight is amenable to dashboard reporting
- Therefore, we need to leave time for other dimensions of quality reporting
