Hospital Leadership Summit: Moving from Good to Great Streaming Video Resource

On September 28, 2006, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality (OFMQ) sponsored a one-day summit on the impact of hospital leadership on quality and quality improvement. The summit’s goals were to explore actions that hospital leaders can take to improve clinical performance and to identify tools that can achieve sustained quality. After the summit, participants received a survey that polled views on one of the recommended tools, as well as ideas on topics for further research. Common themes that emerged were:
  • The quality of hospital clinical care needs improvement
  • Hospital leadership can impact quality improvement
  • Gaps in perceptions exist regarding the commitment to quality improvement across leadership levels
  • Tools and strategies are emerging that measure performance quality and provide data to help drive hospital quality improvement
  • Hospital leadership must take decisive action to achieve improvements in quality
  • More focus is needed on assisting the low performers
